Share your experienceThe Book of Kells Experience at Trinity College starts at 26 euros per person, and the standard visit runs about 90 minutes. It is worth being precise about what you see, because this is where expectations go wrong. The Book of Kells is displayed as two open pages under glass, and you file past them. The manuscript is astonishing and the display is necessarily brief. What most visitors remember instead is the Long Room, the barrel-vaulted eighteenth-century library upstairs, which is one of the most photographed interiors in Europe and deserves it. Trinity students and staff visit free of charge and can bring up to two guests, which is worth knowing if you have any connection to the college.
What was great
The Long Room is spectacular and justifies the ticket largely on its own. The digital exhibition around the manuscript does a real job of explaining what you are looking at. Trinity students, staff and alumni go free and can bring up to two guests.
What nearly ruined the trip
Twenty-six euros is steep for what is, at the manuscript itself, a filed-past view of two pages. The route is one-way and paced by the group. The college is in the middle of Dublin and the surrounding streets are among the busiest in the city, so arriving is rarely calm.
