Share your experienceEPIC charges 22.00 euros for an adult aged 18 to 64 booking online and 24.00 on the day, with teenagers aged 13 to 17 at 15.00 online and 16.00 on the day. The thing to understand before buying is that EPIC has no collection. It is a fully digital museum in the vaults of the CHQ building, telling the story of Irish emigration through twenty rooms of screens, projections and interactive galleries. There are no objects. That is either the appeal or the problem, and which one it is for you is worth deciding in advance. It handles a diffuse, unphotogenic subject, thirty million people leaving over three centuries, better than an artefact museum could. But visitors expecting a traditional museum sometimes feel they have paid 22 euros for a very good exhibition rather than a collection.
What was great
It solves a genuinely hard problem: how to tell the story of emigration when the evidence is scattered across the world. The genealogy element lets Irish-descended visitors look up their own family, which is the part people remember. Booking online saves 2 euros and teenagers pay 15.
What nearly ruined the trip
There are no objects at all, which disappoints anyone expecting a conventional museum. Twenty-two euros is a lot for a screen-based experience in a city with several free national museums. Walk-up costs 2 euros more than booking ahead for exactly the same visit.
