What it is
A museum in a former tram power station in Wola devoted to the Warsaw Rising of 1944, its sixty-three days of fighting, and the destruction of the city that followed.
Why travelers go
It explains modern Warsaw. The reason the city is mostly postwar concrete and reconstructed old town is contained entirely in this building, and no account of Poland's twentieth century makes sense without it.
What is genuinely good
Outstanding exhibition design, the walk-through sewer, the City of Ruins aerial film, early opening hours, and a price that puts it within reach of everyone.
Downsides and tourist traps
Emotionally punishing and unsuitable for young children. The route is not clearly linear. Closed Tuesdays. Busy with school groups in term time.
Best for
Anyone visiting Warsaw for the first time, and anyone interested in the Second World War beyond the western front.
Consider skipping if
You are travelling with small children, or you want a light morning. This is neither.
Practical advice
Arrive at 8am on a weekday when it opens, which is genuinely quiet. Allow three hours. The audio guide hire is 13 PLN and worth it, because the labelling assumes context. Watch the City of Ruins film at the end, not the start.

Normal 35 PLN, discounted 30 PLN, group ticket 35 PLN with a museum guide booked online, large family card holders 10 PLN per person at the box office. Audio guide hire is 13 PLN.
Getting there
Tram to Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego, or a twenty-minute walk west from Rondo Daszynskiego metro station.
Where it sits
Wola, west of the centre, an area that was the site of the worst massacres of the rising and is now largely rebuilt offices and apartments.
How long to allow
Three hours. Two if you skip the film, which would be a mistake.
Accessibility
Lifts serve the main levels, though the sewer reconstruction is by its nature not accessible.

The single most important museum in Warsaw and thirty-five zloty well spent. Arrive at eight, take the audio guide, and leave the afternoon free afterwards.

The Warsaw Rising Museum charges 35 PLN for a normal ticket and 30 PLN discounted, with a large family card ticket at 10 PLN per person. It opens Monday and Wednesday to Friday from 8am to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm, and is closed on Tuesdays.
