RuinMyTrip guide to Museo Frida Kahlo

Official Review

Written by RuinMyTrip Editorial from published research and official sources, not from a personal trip. It is not a traveler review and is never counted in the community rating. How we research.

What it is

The Casa Azul in Coyoacan, Frida Kahlo's family home, preserved as a house museum with her studio, personal effects, wardrobe and a small selection of her paintings.

Why travelers go

Because the house explains the paintings. The mirror above the bed, the corsets and the wheelchair at the easel make the work legible in a way a gallery hang never does.

What is genuinely good

An intact artist's house, a beautiful garden, the reconstructed studio, and the wardrobe exhibition of her clothing and medical corsets.

Downsides and tourist traps

The most expensive museum ticket in the city, at double the resident rate. Online-only sales. Small rooms that fill instantly. Closed Mondays.

Best for

Anyone with any interest in Kahlo, and anyone curious about how Mexico City's intellectual left lived in the 1930s and 1940s.

Consider skipping if

You cannot book in advance. Turning up without a ticket means not getting in, not queueing.

Practical advice

Book online days ahead and take the earliest slot. Combine it with the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera and the Coyoacan market, both nearby. Wednesday opening is 11:00, not 10:00.

Tickets and reservations

General admission 320 pesos, Mexican residents with official ID 160 pesos, students and teachers with a valid card 60 pesos, seniors and children aged 6 to 12 30 pesos. Sold online only; there is no ticket office.

Getting there

Metro line 3 to Coyoacan then a twenty-minute walk, or a taxi to Londres 247. Most visitors come by app taxi from the centre, about forty minutes.

Where it sits

Coyoacan, a colonial village absorbed by the city, with cobbled streets, a market and plazas, and a very different pace from central Mexico City.

How long to allow

Ninety minutes including the garden.

Accessibility

The ground floor and garden are largely accessible; the upper studio is reached by stairs only.

The RuinMyTrip verdict

Book online days ahead or do not go. Expensive and small, and still one of the best house museums anywhere.

★★★★★ Official Review

Three Hundred and Twenty Pesos, and You Cannot Buy It at the Door

The Museo Frida Kahlo charges 320 pesos for general admission, 160 pesos for Mexican residents with official identification, 60 pesos for students and teachers with a valid card, and 30 pesos for seniors and children aged 6 to 12. There is no ticket office: everything is bought online. The Casa Azul is the house Kahlo was born in, lived in with Diego Rivera, and died in, and it is kept as a house rather than…
