What it is
Mexico's national museum of anthropology, in Chapultepec Park, holding the country's pre-Columbian archaeological collections on the ground floor and its living indigenous cultures upstairs.
Why travelers go
Because everything you will see at Teotihuacan, Palenque, Monte Alban and Chichen Itza is explained here, and because the Sun Stone in person is not the object the photographs suggest.
What is genuinely good
An unrivalled collection, a masterpiece of a building, the Bonampak murals, the Pakal tomb reconstruction, and a price that is a fraction of the equivalent elsewhere.
Downsides and tourist traps
Far too big for one visit. Patchy English labelling. Crowded on Sundays when nationals enter free. The upper floor is quiet because most people run out of stamina.
Best for
Every visitor to Mexico City, and essential before any trip to the archaeological sites.
Consider skipping if
Nothing, really. If time is short, do the Mexica and Maya halls and leave the rest.
Practical advice
Go on a weekday morning. Do the Mexica hall with the Sun Stone first, then Maya, then Teotihuacan, and accept that you will not see it all. Avoid Sunday unless crowds do not bother you.
Tickets and reservations
General admission 210.00 pesos; Mexican nationals and foreign residents 105.00 pesos. Sunday is free for Mexican nationals and residents. Parking is 50.00 pesos per hour.
Getting there
Metro line 7 to Auditorio, then a ten-minute walk through the park, or line 1 to Chapultepec and a longer walk. Buses along Reforma stop outside.
Where it sits
Chapultepec Park, the large forested park west of the centre, alongside the Rufino Tamayo museum and the Museo de Arte Moderno, with Chapultepec Castle on the hill nearby.
How long to allow
Half a day minimum, a full day if you intend to see the upper floor.
Accessibility
Step-free with ramps and lifts throughout both floors, and wheelchairs available to borrow.

The Museo Nacional de Antropologia charges 210 pesos for general admission and 105 pesos for Mexican nationals and foreign residents. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00.
