Share your experienceThe Museo Nacional de Antropologia charges 210 pesos for general admission and 105 pesos for Mexican nationals and foreign residents. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00. It is the best museum of its kind anywhere in the Americas and it is not a close contest. The Aztec Sun Stone, the Olmec heads, the reconstructed tomb of Pakal from Palenque and a full-scale replica of the Bonampak murals are all here, arranged by culture around a courtyard with a vast concrete umbrella pouring water from a single column. The building, by Pedro Ramirez Vazquez and finished in 1964, is as important as anything in it, and the upper floor on living indigenous cultures is the part almost everyone skips and should not.
What was great
The Sun Stone, the Olmec heads and Pakal's tomb in one building. The courtyard and its fountain. Two hundred and ten pesos for a collection that would cost three times as much anywhere else.
What nearly ruined the trip
It is too large to see properly in a day and most people try. English labelling is inconsistent. It sits in Chapultepec, so the walk in from the road is longer than expected, and Sunday is free for nationals and correspondingly packed.
