For the ceiling and the breakfast, in that order. It is the best-preserved cafe interior in the city that functions as an ordinary cafe rather than a monument.
What is genuinely good
A restored 1893 ceiling, early weekday opening, serious baking, and a takeaway counter for the same pastries at a fraction of the sit-down bill.
Downsides
Expensive by Prague standards. Weekend queues. Across the river from the Old Town, though that is also part of its appeal.
Best for
Anyone who values a breakfast room, and anyone walking between the Charles Bridge and Petrin who wants a reason to stop.
Consider eating elsewhere if
You want cheap Czech food. This is a Viennese-style grand cafe and priced accordingly.
Practical advice
Go on a weekday morning when it opens at 08:00, which is the only time the room is calm. Look up before you order. Use the bakery counter if the sit-down price is more than you want to pay.
