What it is
Gaudi's basilica in the Eixample, begun in 1882 and structurally completed in 2026, now the tallest church in the world at 172.5 metres. It is a working basilica as well as the most visited building in Barcelona.
Why travelers go
For the interior, which is the part photographs consistently fail at. The nave columns branch like trees and the stained glass throws colour across the whole space in a way that changes hour by hour.
What is genuinely good
It is finished, which is new. The interior light is extraordinary, the tower climb reveals detail invisible from the ground, and the official site sells directly at a clearly published price with real concessions for seniors, under-30s and students.
Downsides and tourist traps
The full experience costs 36 euros once towers are added. Timed entry is unforgiving and you get 30 minutes of grace, not an afternoon. The reseller ecosystem outranks the basilica in search results and charges more for the identical ticket. Nearly 4.9 million people came in 2025 and it feels like it.

Anyone visiting Barcelona for the first time, people interested in architecture or engineering, and visitors under 30 or over 65 who get a meaningful discount.
Consider skipping if
You dislike crowds intensely and cannot book an early slot, or your budget only stretches to one Gaudi site and you would rather have the gardens and city views at Park Guell.
Practical advice
Book a slot on the official site before you book anything else in Barcelona, and if you want the towers book that at the same time because it is a separate product that sells out first. Arrive within your 30-minute window. Morning light and late-afternoon light hit opposite sides of the nave, so the time you pick changes what you see.
Tickets and reservations
Basilica entry is 26,00 euros, or 36,00 with towers. Seniors pay 21,00 and 28,00; under-30s and student card holders pay 24,00 and 34,00. A guided tour is 30,00 euros at base rate. Disabled visitors and their companions pay only for additional services, with general entrance free. Entry is timed, with 30 minutes of grace after the time on the ticket.
Getting there
Sagrada Familia station on Metro lines 2 and 5 comes up directly beside the basilica. It is a walk of roughly twenty-five minutes from the Eixample centre.
Where it sits
In the Eixample, the nineteenth-century grid north of the old city, surrounded by an ordinary residential neighbourhood rather than a tourist quarter. The two small parks either side are where the photographs are taken from.
How long to allow
Ninety minutes for the basilica alone, two to two and a half hours if you add a tower. The queue and security are inside that estimate only if you booked a slot.
Accessibility
General entrance is free for disabled visitors and their companions, who pay only for additional services. Tower access is by lift and stairs and is more limited.

Now that it is finished, this is the one Barcelona sight that is genuinely unmissable. Book direct and early, take the towers only if the extra ten euros is comfortable, and go for the interior rather than the facade.
