Berlin city tax 2026: 7.5 percent of the net room price

Berlin charges an overnight accommodation tax of 7.5 percent in 2026. The rate comes from the Senate Department for Finance, whose tax FAQ records that the rate was raised to 7.5 percent and applies the tax to paid overnight stays in the city.

What changes in 2026

The same FAQ lists three changes taking effect on January 1, 2026. The taxation and filing period becomes the calendar quarter only, the 10 bed threshold that kept the smallest guest houses outside the tax is dropped, and electronic filing of the return becomes compulsory. All three land on the accommodation business rather than on the guest, but the second one quietly widens the number of Berlin properties where the charge shows up on a bill at all.

A worked example

Four nights in a Berlin hotel at 130 euros a night is 520 euros of room charges. At 7.5 percent the city tax on that stay is 39 euros. A full week at the same rate, 910 euros of room charges, carries 68.25 euros of tax. The charge is a percentage rather than a flat nightly amount, so it rises with the room rate rather than with the number of people in the room.

What is still unclear

The FAQ page consulted here does not spell out exactly which parts of a booking make up the taxable amount, so whether a rate that bundles breakfast is taxed in full is not answered there.
