Share your experienceLe Procope serves a two-course menu at 26.50 euros and three courses at 33.50 euros, available Monday to Saturday from midday to 6pm. It opened in 1686, which makes it the oldest cafe in Paris still trading, and the list of people who used it reads like a syllabus: Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot, Benjamin Franklin, Danton, Robespierre. Napoleon's hat is in a case by the stairs. The rooms are red, mirrored and hung with portraits, and the cooking is classic French done to a standard that will not surprise anyone. What you are buying is three hundred and forty years of continuity, at a set-menu price that makes it accessible.
What was great
The oldest cafe in Paris, still working, with a set menu at 26.50 euros that makes the history affordable. Rooms full of genuine period detail. Open through the afternoon, when much of Paris is not.
What nearly ruined the trip
It is a heavily touristed institution and the cooking reflects that. The set menu is lunch-and-early-evening only. The Napoleon's hat display leans into the museum register rather more than necessary.
