The Zeughauskeller is open daily from 11.30 am to 11.00 pm, Sundays included, and serves hot meals all day from 11.30 to 22.00. In a city where a great many kitchens close between services and most things shut on Sunday, that is the single most useful fact about it. The building is a sixteenth-century arsenal and it still looks like one: a vaulted hall, long shared tables, halberds and armour on the walls, and a cannon. The food is Swiss and German in the substantial sense, and the Kalbsgeschnetzeltes and the metre-long sausages are what people order. It is two minutes from Paradeplatz, which means it is surrounded by banks and is one of very few places in that part of Zurich where a normal person can eat without booking.

What was great

Open every day from 11.30 to 23.00 with hot food throughout, which solves the Zurich Sunday problem outright. A genuine sixteenth-century arsenal hall. Walk-ins are normal.

What nearly ruined the trip

Loud, busy and full of tourists at peak times. Swiss prices apply, so a plate of veal and rosti is not cheap. Shared tables are the norm, which not everyone enjoys.

Value for money

★★★★☆ Good value
