Share your experienceMuseo Larco charges 50 soles for general admission, 35 soles for over-60s, 25 soles for students and children aged 9 to 17, and 1 sol for children aged 3 to 8. Children under 3 enter free. The collection is pre-Columbian, mostly Moche, and it is enormous. What makes the museum unusual is that it does not hide the rest: the visible storeroom holds around 45,000 catalogued pieces on open shelves, rack after rack, which conveys the scale of Peruvian ceramic production in a way no curated selection can. It occupies an eighteenth-century mansion built on a seventh-century pyramid in Pueblo Libre, surrounded by gardens, and the restaurant on the terrace is one of the better meals in Lima.
What was great
The visible storeroom, which almost no museum anywhere allows. Superb Moche portrait vessels and metalwork. Gardens, a genuinely good restaurant, and a building worth seeing on its own.
What nearly ruined the trip
Fifty soles is at the top of the Lima museum range. Pueblo Libre is a taxi ride from Miraflores and Barranco where most visitors stay. The erotic ceramics gallery is signposted in a way that guarantees crowds.
