What it is
A private museum of pre-Columbian art in Pueblo Libre, Lima, in an eighteenth-century mansion built over a pre-Columbian pyramid, holding one of the largest collections of Moche ceramics in the world.
Why travelers go
For the visible storeroom. Seeing 45,000 pieces on open racks changes what you understand about how much of this material exists, and no photograph of a museum case does that.
What is genuinely good
An outstanding Moche collection, the open storeroom, the gold and silver gallery, gardens, and a terrace restaurant that is a destination in itself.
Downsides and tourist traps
Expensive for Lima. Away from the tourist districts. The erotic gallery draws a disproportionate share of the crowd and the giggling.
Best for
Anyone going to Machu Picchu, who should come here first, and anyone interested in ceramics or ancient art.
Consider skipping if
You are in Lima for one night between flights. In that case eat in Miraflores instead.

Go before Cusco, not after: the context makes the sites far more legible. Book a time slot online. Leave time for the storeroom, which people rush and should not.

Getting there
A fifteen to twenty minute taxi from Miraflores. There is no convenient metro; use a registered app taxi rather than the street.
Where it sits
Pueblo Libre, a quiet residential district between the centre and the coast, away from the tourist strip and pleasant in daylight.
How long to allow
Two hours, including the storeroom.
Accessibility
Ramps and step-free routes serve the main galleries, though the historic mansion has some tight passages.
