A private museum of pre-Columbian art in Pueblo Libre, Lima, in an eighteenth-century mansion built over a pre-Columbian pyramid, holding one of the largest collections of Moche ceramics in the world.
For the visible storeroom. Seeing 45,000 pieces on open racks changes what you understand about how much of this material exists, and no photograph of a museum case does that.
An outstanding Moche collection, the open storeroom, the gold and silver gallery, gardens, and a terrace restaurant that is a destination in itself.
Expensive for Lima. Away from the tourist districts. The erotic gallery draws a disproportionate share of the crowd and the giggling.

Museo Larco charges 50 soles for general admission, 35 soles for over-60s, 25 soles for students and children aged 9 to 17, and 1 sol for children aged 3 to 8. Children under 3 enter free. The collection is pre-Columbian, mostly Moche, and it is enormous. What makes the museum unusual is that it does not hide the rest: the visible storeroom holds around 45,000 catalogued pieces on open shelves, rack after rack…
