Share your experienceM+ charges HKD 190 for a standard ticket and HKD 100 for concessions. It is closed on Mondays, and the ground space and roof garden remain free to enter without a ticket. The museum opened in 2021 in a Herzog and de Meuron building on the West Kowloon waterfront, and it is the most serious attempt anywhere to build a collection of twentieth and twenty-first century visual culture from Asia. Design, architecture, moving image and ink painting are treated as equals rather than as departments beneath painting. The view is the other half of the ticket. The building faces the whole of Hong Kong Island across the harbour, and the LED facade on the north side turns the museum itself into part of the skyline it looks at.
What was great
A genuinely new kind of collection, superbly installed, in one of the best museum buildings completed this century. The free roof garden and ground floor. Late Friday opening to 22:00.
What nearly ruined the trip
A hundred and ninety dollars is high by Hong Kong museum standards, where the public museums charge a fraction of it. Session-based ticketing means you commit to a time slot. Closed Mondays.
