RuinMyTrip guide to M+

Official Review

Written by RuinMyTrip Editorial from published research and official sources, not from a personal trip. It is not a traveler review and is never counted in the community rating. How we research.

What it is

A museum of twentieth and twenty-first century visual culture in the West Kowloon Cultural District, covering design, architecture, moving image and visual art with a particular focus on Asia.

Why travelers go

Because no other museum has tried to write this history, and because the building and the harbour view would be worth the trip even if the collection were ordinary, which it is not.

What is genuinely good

An original and ambitious collection, exceptional installation, a free roof garden and ground floor, late Friday opening, and the best museum view in Asia.

Downsides and tourist traps

Expensive relative to Hong Kong's public museums. Timed session tickets. Closed Mondays. The West Kowloon district around it is still filling in.

Best for

Anyone interested in design, film or contemporary art, and anyone who wants a view of the island skyline from the Kowloon side.

Consider skipping if

You have one day and want Victoria Peak and the Star Ferry. Those are the stronger call for a first visit.

Practical advice

Take a Friday night session and stay for the skyline after dark. The roof garden is free, so you can see the view without a ticket if the collection is not for you. Last entry to the galleries is thirty minutes before closing.

Tickets and reservations

Standard HKD 190, concessions HKD 100. A two-person adult and child combo is HKD 250 and a three-person combo HKD 400. Tickets are sold by session: morning, afternoon and, on Fridays, night.

Getting there

MTR to Austin or Kowloon station, then a ten-minute walk through the West Kowloon Cultural District. The Star Ferry from Central lands at Tsim Sha Tsui, about twenty minutes away on foot.

Where it sits

The West Kowloon Cultural District, a reclaimed waterfront strip facing Hong Kong Island, alongside the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Xiqu Centre.

How long to allow

Two to three hours, plus time on the roof.

Accessibility

Step-free throughout with lifts to all levels and accessible routes to the roof garden.

The RuinMyTrip verdict

The best museum in Hong Kong and worth the hundred and ninety dollars. Take a Friday evening slot and finish on the free roof garden after dark.

A Hundred and Ninety Hong Kong Dollars, and the Roof Garden Is Free

M+ charges HKD 190 for a standard ticket and HKD 100 for concessions. It is closed on Mondays, and the ground space and roof garden remain free to enter without a ticket. The museum opened in 2021 in a Herzog and de Meuron building on the West Kowloon waterfront, and it is the most serious attempt anywhere to build a collection of twentieth and twenty-first century visual culture from Asia. Design, architecture…
