Share your experienceThe National Museum of Iceland charges 3,300 ISK for adults and 1,600 ISK for students and seniors, and admits children under 18 and people with disabilities free. It opens daily from 10:00 to 17:00. The permanent exhibition, Making of a Nation, runs from the settlement in the ninth century to the present in one continuous line, which is the right structure for a country whose entire recorded history fits comfortably into a single hall. The Valthjofsstadur church door and the small bronze figure from Eyrarland are the objects people remember. It is also the antidote to a Reykjavik trip that is otherwise entirely about landscape. Two hours here explains why the farms outside town look the way they do, and why Iceland spent so long being poor.
What was great
One clear narrative rather than a maze, free for under-18s, and small enough to finish properly. The medieval carvings are world class, and the museum is calm even in high season.
What nearly ruined the trip
Thirty-three hundred krona is real money for a two-hour museum, though everything in Iceland costs this. The building is a plain 1950s block on the university edge of town, and the walk out is dull in bad weather.
