Now Charges Non-Europeans Ten Euros More, and Still Cannot Be Done in a Day

The Louvre's pricing works in a way that matters to most people reading this. General admission is 22,00 euros for residents and citizens of the European Economic Area and 32,00 euros for everyone else, published as a two-tier rate on the museum's own site. That is a meaningful gap and it is better known before you arrive than at the desk. Under 18s and EEA residents under 26 have their own free and reduced categories. The other thing worth knowing is that the building defeats people. This is a former royal palace's worth of galleries, and the standard mistake is treating it as a checklist. The Mona Lisa is a long shuffle for a short look at a small painting behind glass across a crowded room, and it is the least rewarding famous thing in the building.

What was great

The collection is without equal in range, from Mesopotamia to the mid-nineteenth century, and the building is a large part of the visit. Under 18s and EEA residents under 26 get in free or reduced. The Near Eastern antiquities and the French sculpture courts are near-empty while the crowd concentrates on three or four paintings.

What nearly ruined the trip

Non-EEA visitors pay 32,00 euros against 22,00 for EEA visitors, a ten-euro gap based on where you are from rather than what you see. The Mona Lisa room is the worst-value twenty minutes in Paris. Signage is poor for a building this size, and unplanned visits reliably become three hours of walking and very little looking.
