What it is
Zurich's principal art museum on Heimplatz, in two buildings linked underground, holding European art from the medieval period to the present with particular strength in Munch, Hodler and Giacometti.
Why travelers go
For the Munch rooms, which are the largest holding outside Norway, and for a Swiss collection that explains Hodler and Giacometti properly rather than in passing.
What is genuinely good
Outstanding Munch and Giacometti, a well-made Chipperfield extension, free entry for under-14s, and inclusion in the Zurich Card for the collection.
Downsides and tourist traps
Expensive even for Switzerland. The two-building layout is confusing on a first visit. The cloakroom charges unless you bought your ticket online.
Best for
Anyone with a serious interest in modern European painting, and holders of the Zurich Card, for whom the collection is free.
Consider skipping if
You are in Zurich for a day and the weather is good. The lake and the old town are the better call in that case.
Practical advice
Buy online, which makes the cloakroom free. Decide in advance whether you want the major exhibition, because the cheaper ticket does not include it. Start in the Chipperfield building and cross underground.

Getting there
Tram 3, 5, 8 or 9 to Kunsthaus, which stops on Heimplatz outside the door. It is a ten-minute walk uphill from Bellevue.
Where it sits
Heimplatz, on the eastern edge of the old town below the university quarter, a short walk from the Grossmunster and the lake.
How long to allow
Two hours for the collection, three if a major exhibition is on.
Accessibility
Both buildings are step-free with lifts, and the underground passage between them is level.

Go for the Munch rooms and buy online so the cloakroom is free. Twenty-four francs is steep but the collection earns it; skip the major exhibition unless it is one you came for.
