Official Review

What it is

A grill restaurant on Laekjargata in central Reykjavik, cooking Icelandic lamb, seafood and game over charcoal and lava stone in a 1912 building.

Why travelers eat here

For Icelandic ingredients cooked over fire by people who do it properly, which is the one thing worth spending money on in a country where everything costs a lot.

What is genuinely good

Charcoal and lava-stone grilling, excellent lamb and langoustine, a handsome room, and a central location you can walk to.

Downsides

Expensive even for Iceland. Books out in high season. A dark, heavy dining room.

Best for

Anyone spending one evening eating well in Reykjavik, and anyone who wants Icelandic lamb done right.

Consider eating elsewhere if

You are budgeting carefully. Reykjavik has excellent soup and hot dogs for a tiny fraction of this.

Practical advice

Book ahead in summer. Order lamb or langoustine rather than the international dishes. The snacks are priced as a course, so treat them that way.

Prices and reservations

A la carte with a tasting menu available. Snacks from 1,590 ISK. Reservations online and advisable.

Getting there

Central, on Laekjargata, five minutes on foot from Hallgrimskirkja or the harbour.

Where it sits

Laekjargata in central Reykjavik, beside the old parliament and Austurvollur square, in the middle of the walkable downtown.

How long to allow

Two hours.

The RuinMyTrip verdict

The best grill in Iceland and priced like it. Book ahead, order the lamb, and treat the snacks as a course rather than a nibble.

Fifteen Hundred and Ninety Krona for Olives, Which Tells You the Rest

Grillmarkadurinn charges 1,590 ISK for marinated olives and 2,290 ISK for honey milk bread with whipped butter, arctic thyme and lava salt. Those are the snacks, and they set the tone for the bill. The kitchen grills over charcoal and lava stone, and the Icelandic ingredients are the point: lamb, langoustine, arctic char, and game in season. The dining room is dark wood, leather and stone, in a 1912 building on…
