The canal house on the Prinsengracht where Anne Frank and seven others hid from 1942 to 1944, preserved with the annexe behind the bookcase, alongside a museum built around the diary and the events surrounding it.
Because the rooms themselves do something no book or film manages. The scale of the hiding place, and how ordinary the building is from the street, is the part that stays with people.
Modest pricing for a site of this significance, with 7 euros for ages 10 to 17. The curation is restrained and the empty rooms are left to speak. The 9:00 opening gives a genuinely quieter slot for a visit that benefits from quiet.
Timed online booking is mandatory and slots sell out, which turns a spontaneous visit into a closed door. The I amsterdam Card is not accepted for a discount. The house is physically tight, with steep narrow stairs, and busy slots feel crowded quickly.
Essentially every visitor to Amsterdam, and particularly anyone travelling with teenagers, for whom the 7 euro rate and the subject matter combine well.
You have not booked and are leaving tomorrow, because there is no walk-up option. Consider skipping if you are travelling with young children, since the subject is heavy and the stairs are difficult for small legs.
Book online as far ahead as you can manage; this is the one Amsterdam attraction where leaving it to the day will simply fail. Take an early slot. Expect steep stairs and pack light, because the annexe is not a place to be carrying a large bag.
Adults pay 16.50 euros, ages 10 to 17 pay 7 euros and ages 0 to 9 pay 1 euro, each including a 1 euro booking fee. Museumkaart and ICOM cardholders pay the 1 euro booking fee, an EYC card is 7 euros, and the I amsterdam Card gives no discount. Entry is by timed online ticket only.
Tram 13, 17 or 19 to Westermarkt puts you a minute away. It is around a twenty-minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal along the canals, which is a pleasant approach in its own right.
On the Prinsengracht in the Jordaan, beside the Westerkerk, in the canal belt west of the centre. The Jordaan is one of the most attractive districts in the city and worth walking either side of your slot.
About ninety minutes, including the museum section after the annexe. It is not a visit to rush and the routing does not encourage rushing.
The historic house has steep, narrow staircases and is difficult or impossible for visitors with reduced mobility; the museum publishes accessibility guidance and it should be checked before booking.
The most important thing to see in Amsterdam and one of the least expensive. Book it before you book anything else on your trip, take the earliest slot you can, and do not count on the I amsterdam Card helping you here.
