Editorial- Base yourself in Getsemani, not the walled city: current cost breakdowns show a 40 to 50 percent price gap between the two for comparable hotels and restaurants.
- Budget street food realistically: empanadas run about 1,000 to 2,000 pesos and a full fonda lunch plate 8,000 to 12,000 pesos, versus 15,000 to 25,000 pesos for a casual sit-down meal.
- Avoid February through May and September if you're heat sensitive; average humidity runs 79 to 83 percent year round and those months combine peak heat with peak humidity.
- Use Uber or InDriver instead of street taxis; taxis don't run meters and require negotiating a fare before you get in, while InDriver fares typically run 20 to 30 percent below Uber.
- Check the cruise port schedule before booking your walled-city time; the 2025 to 2026 season is running roughly 26 percent higher in passenger volume than the prior season.
- Keep your phone in a zipped pocket, not your hand, in the walled city and Getsemani; phone snatching and pickpocketing are the most commonly reported tourist crimes, per embassy and safety reports.
