Share your experienceCafe Tortoni is at Avenida de Mayo 825 and opens Monday to Sunday from 08:00 to 21:00. It was inaugurated in 1858, which makes it the oldest cafe in Argentina. The interior is the point: French-style, with marble tables, stained glass, mirrored panels and busts of the writers and musicians who used it. Borges and Carlos Gardel both drank here, and the cafe has never been shy about saying so. It is unquestionably a tourist stop now, with a queue at the door on most afternoons. Go early, order coffee and churros with chocolate, and the room does the rest.
What was great
The oldest cafe in the country, open every day from eight in the morning. An intact nineteenth-century French interior with stained glass and marble. Tango shows in the back room in the evenings.
What nearly ruined the trip
The queue on Avenida de Mayo is real and often long. Service is stretched. Prices are high for Buenos Aires and the food is beside the point, which nobody tells you before you order.
