A royal chapel completed in the 1240s inside the medieval palace complex on the Ile de la Cite, built to house relics and engineered so the upper chapel's walls are almost entirely glass rather than stone.
For roughly fifteen minutes of light that is not available anywhere else. The glass is largely thirteenth-century and the upper chapel is one of the high points of Gothic building in Europe.
It is small, which is a virtue: there is one thing to see and you will see it properly rather than trudging past a hundred rooms. Free entry for under-26 EU residents is a real concession on an expensive ticket, and the location makes it easy to combine with the rest of the island.
The price is high for the floor area and the payoff is weather-dependent. The room is small enough that crowding is felt immediately. Courthouse security controls the entrance and can add an unpredictable wait.
Anyone interested in medieval art or architecture, photographers who can pick their day, and EU residents under 26 who get in free and can afford to be opportunistic about the weather.
The forecast is grey and you cannot move your date, or you are on a tight budget and have already committed to other paid sights on the island. This is a supplement to a Paris trip, not a foundation of one.
Go on a bright day, ideally late morning to early afternoon when the sun is on the glass. Allow for security screening shared with the Palais de Justice. Combine it with the Conciergerie next door rather than making a separate trip.

Cite on Metro line 4 is essentially at the door. Saint-Michel Notre-Dame on RER B and C and Metro line 4 is a short walk across the river.
On the Ile de la Cite in the 1st arrondissement, inside the old royal palace precinct now largely occupied by the Palais de Justice, a few minutes from Notre-Dame and directly beside the Conciergerie.
Forty-five minutes to an hour, and that includes sitting in the upper chapel for a while, which is the correct way to do it.
An access ramp serves the ground floor and a lift reaches the upper chapel, taking two wheelchair users at a time. A wheelchair is available on loan and guide and assistance dogs are allowed. There are no accessible toilets and no reserved parking. Disabled visitors and their companions are admitted free on presentation of valid proof.
One of the few places where a high price for a single room is defensible. Check the forecast, go when the sun is out, and give yourself time to sit rather than photograph. If the sky is flat grey, spend the 22 euros elsewhere and come back.
