What it is
A public aquarium in the Parque das Nacoes marina, built for Expo 98, arranged around a single very large central tank with four habitat zones surrounding it representing the North Atlantic, Antarctic, Pacific and Indian Ocean coasts.
Why travelers go
For the central tank, which is visible from every surrounding habitat so the whole building reads as one ocean rather than a corridor of glass boxes. It is a genuinely better idea than most aquariums manage.
What is genuinely good
Outstanding design that keeps people looking for far longer than usual. Free entry for under-3s and a real discount for over-65s. Cheaper midday slots. The walk out over the water to the building is a good start to a visit.
Downsides and tourist traps
Twenty-nine euros an adult in the opening slot, and the family total mounts quickly. It is a long way from the historic centre. It is one of the busiest attractions in Lisbon at weekends and in school holidays.
Best for
Families, anyone travelling with children, and visitors interested in design and architecture as much as marine life.
Consider skipping if
You have two days in Lisbon and have not seen Belem or Alfama. Those are the city. This is a very good aquarium that happens to be in Lisbon rather than a reason to come.
Practical advice
Book the 12 pm to 3:30 pm slot rather than the opening one: it is 2 euros cheaper per adult and less crowded. Allow an hour each way for travel from the centre. Combine it with Parque das Nacoes itself, which is free to walk and has the cable car along the waterfront.
Tickets and reservations
Time-slot pricing. For 10 am to 11:30 am: 0 to 2 free, 3 to 12 at 17 euros, 13 to 64 at 29 euros, over-65s at 19 euros. For 12 pm to 3:30 pm: 16, 27 and 18 euros for the same tiers, with under-3s still free.
Getting there
Oriente station on Metro line 3, served also by mainline and suburban trains, then about ten minutes on foot through Parque das Nacoes.
Where it sits
Parque das Nacoes in the far north-east of Lisbon, the redeveloped Expo 98 site on the Tagus, which is modern, spacious and entirely unlike the old city. The Vasco da Gama bridge and the waterfront cable car are both here.
How long to allow
Two hours inside. Allow half a day including travel from central Lisbon.
Accessibility
The building is step-free throughout with lifts between the two viewing levels, and the approach walkway is level.

The best aquarium in Europe and worth the trip out, provided you book the midday slot rather than the opening one. It is a second-day Lisbon attraction, not a substitute for Belem or the old city.

The Oceanario prices by time slot, which is unusual and worth understanding before you book. For the 10 am to 11:30 am slot, ages 0 to 2 are free, 3 to 12 year olds pay 17 euros, 13 to 64 year olds pay 29 euros and over-65s pay 19 euros. From 12 pm to 3:30 pm the same tiers drop to 16, 27 and 18 euros. So the busiest slot is also the most expensive one, and going a couple of hours later is both cheaper and quieter.…
