What it is
The United States' official museum of the Second World War, on a multi-building campus in the New Orleans Warehouse District, covering the American war in Europe and the Pacific.
Why travelers go
For the scale and for the objects. Aircraft, landing craft and vehicles in the room with you, plus the best D-Day exhibition anywhere, given that the landing craft themselves were built in New Orleans.
What is genuinely good
Several substantial buildings, genuine aircraft and vehicles, a strong D-Day gallery, and a personal dog tag that gives the visit a thread.
Downsides and tourist traps
Aggressive package upselling. Needs a full day. A celebratory register that avoids some of the harder questions. Popular enough that midday is crowded.
Best for
Anyone with an interest in the Second World War, and families with teenagers.
Consider skipping if
You have half a day in New Orleans. The French Quarter and the Garden District are the better use of it.
Practical advice
Arrive at opening and plan a full day. Decide on the package before you get to the counter, because deciding at the desk is how people spend forty dollars they did not intend to. The 4D film is worth it once.

Getting there
The St Charles or Riverfront streetcar to the Warehouse District, or a fifteen-minute walk from the French Quarter along Magazine Street.

The Warehouse District, south-west of the French Quarter, an area of converted warehouses, galleries and restaurants that is quieter than the Quarter and easy to walk.
How long to allow
A full day. Four hours is the absolute minimum.
Accessibility
Fully step-free with lifts between all buildings and levels, and wheelchairs available to borrow.
