What it is
The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, in Palermo, holding twentieth-century Latin American painting and sculpture alongside temporary exhibitions and a cinema.
Why travelers go
Because Latin American modernism is treated here as a subject in its own right rather than a footnote to Europe, and because the Kahlo and the Abaporu are both in this building.
What is genuinely good
A tightly chosen collection with no filler, half-price Wednesdays, a good cinema, and a building designed for looking at paintings.
Downsides and tourist traps
Small permanent collection. Prices change frequently with inflation. Not walkable from the centre. Closed Tuesdays.
Best for
Anyone interested in modern art, and anyone who wants to understand what Argentina thinks of itself.
Consider skipping if
You have one day and it is a Recoleta cemetery and steak day. This wants unhurried attention.
Practical advice
Come on a Wednesday for half price. Check the cinema listing before you go, because the programme is better than most cinemas in the city. Combine it with the Botanical Garden and Palermo's parks, which are minutes away.
Tickets and reservations
General admission 12,000 pesos; students, teachers and pensioners with accreditation 6,000 pesos; under-5s free. On Wednesdays general admission is 6,000 pesos and concessions 3,000. Cinema tickets are priced separately at 8,000 pesos general.
Getting there
Bus 67, 102 or 130 to Avenida Figueroa Alcorta, or a fifteen-minute taxi from the centre. The nearest subte stations are a long walk away.
Where it sits
Palermo, on Figueroa Alcorta beside the parks, close to the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the botanical garden, in the greenest part of the city.
How long to allow
Ninety minutes to two hours.
