What it is
The museum of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Avenidas Novas, holding the founder's private collection of ancient, Islamic, Asian and European art, alongside the CAM modern art centre and a large public garden.
Why travelers go
For range and quality that no other museum in Portugal comes near, and for the Lalique jewellery, which is the finest collection of it anywhere.
What is genuinely good
Egyptian, Islamic, Chinese and European rooms all strong. The Lalique collection. A superb modernist building. A free garden. Late Saturday opening. Free entry to exhibitions on Sundays from 14:00.
Downsides and tourist traps
Confusing ticket tiers. Closed Tuesdays. Away from the tourist centre. Eighteen euros is steep for the city.
Best for
Anyone who likes decorative arts, and anyone staying in Lisbon long enough to leave Baixa and Belem behind.
Consider skipping if
You have two days and have not yet seen Belem. The Jeronimos monastery has the stronger claim on a short trip.
Practical advice
Decide which ticket you want before you get to the desk. Saturday evening is the calmest slot. The garden is free, so it works as a break in the middle rather than a separate trip.
Tickets and reservations
All inclusive 18.00 euros, museum and CAM 16.00 euros, CAM alone 12.00 euros, CAM temporary exhibitions 8.00 euros. Discounts of 25 per cent for under-30s and 10 per cent for over-65s. Free entry on Sundays from 14:00.
Getting there
Metro to Sao Sebastiao or Praca de Espanha, both a few minutes' walk. It is about fifteen minutes by metro from Baixa.
Where it sits
Avenidas Novas, a twentieth-century residential and office district north of the centre, quiet and green and largely free of tourists.
How long to allow
Two to three hours for the founder's collection, longer with CAM and the garden.
Accessibility
Step-free throughout with lifts, and the garden paths are largely level.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum charges 18.00 euros for an all-inclusive ticket, 16.00 euros for the museum and CAM together, and 12.00 euros for CAM alone. It opens 10:00 to 18:00, until 21:00 on Saturdays, and is closed on Tuesdays.
