Tokyo accommodation tax 2026: 100 or 200 yen per person per night

Tokyo accommodation tax 2026: 100 or 200 yen per person per night

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government charges 100 yen a night per person for rooms from 10,000 to under 15,000 yen and 200 yen at 15,000 yen and above. Cheaper rooms pay nothing.

The rate

Tokyo's accommodation tax in 2026 is either 100 yen or 200 yen per person per night, depending on the room rate. The Bureau of Taxation of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government lists the bands on its accommodation tax page for guests: 100 yen where the charge is 10,000 yen or more but under 15,000 yen, and 200 yen where it is 15,000 yen or more. Below 10,000 yen per person per night nothing is due at all.

What a stay costs

Two people in a room billed at 22,000 yen per person per night for five nights fall in the upper band. That is 200 yen each per night, so 1,000 yen each and 2,000 yen for the pair across the stay. A hostel bed at 9,000 yen a night adds nothing. Even at the top band the tax is small against Tokyo room rates, which is the honest summary: this is a rounding error, not a budget item.

The 2027 change

The same official page carries a note that the rules change from 1 April 2027 and move away from the flat bands. For any stay falling inside 2026 the two amounts above are what applies.

What the guest page does not spell out is how the tax is handled on package rates that bundle meals, so the taxable room portion of a package may not be obvious on the bill.
