Gold Museum San Jose tickets 2026: 8,800 colones for foreign adults

Foreign adults pay 8,800 colones to enter the Museos del Banco Central de Costa Rica in San Jose in 2026, the underground complex beneath the Plaza de la Cultura that holds the Pre Columbian Gold Museum. According to the museum's own visitor page, the same ticket costs 3,000 colones for Costa Ricans and residents, so a foreign visitor pays close to three times the local rate for the identical rooms.

Student and child rates

Foreign students are listed at 6,950 colones and national students at 1,000 colones, both on presentation of a valid card. Children under 12 enter free, as do Costa Rican senior citizens, tourism guides, members of indigenous communities and ICOM members. The numismatic collection and the temporary exhibition rooms sit inside the same building and are not charged separately.

Opening hours

The page gives hours as Monday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., so the museum opens every day of the week. Nothing on the page mentions timed entry, sold out slots or advance booking, which makes this one of the few well known city museums a traveller can still simply walk into.

A worked example

Two foreign adults with a child of 10 pay 17,600 colones in total, because the child is free. Swap that child for a 15 year old and the bill rises to 26,400 colones unless the teenager can produce a student card, in which case it is 24,550.

What the page does not say is whether the foreign rate can be paid in US dollars at the desk, which is common in San Jose and would move the final figure with the day's exchange rate.
