Share your experienceArmacao dos Buzios is a small peninsula town about 170 kilometres east of Rio de Janeiro, and it is still the easiest beach escape from the city. Brigitte Bardot's visit in 1964 made it famous; the beaches are what keep it busy. The peninsula has a long list of beaches within a short ride of each other, and they are different enough to choose by mood. Geriba is the long surf beach. Azeda and Azedinha are small, calm coves near the centre. Joao Fernandes is the busy, pretty one with restaurants on the sand. In the evening everyone walks Rua das Pedras and the Orla Bardot waterfront. Getting there is simple. Fly into Rio, then take an Auto Viacao 1001 coach from Rodoviaria Novo Rio. The scheduled run is about three and a half hours, more when the traffic out of Rio is bad, and tickets are sold on the operator's site and app, so check the current fare there rather than trusting an old number. Driving takes about three hours on a good day. Timing matters more than in Rio. January to March is the Brazilian summer holiday: hot, wetter, crowded and at its most expensive. The southern winter, roughly June to September, is drier and milder, and the shoulder months are the quiet, cheaper option. Once there, you can walk much of the town, and local vans along the main avenue are the cheap way between beaches.
What was great
Many very different beaches packed onto one small peninsula, most of them a short ride apart. An easy, direct coach connection from Rio. A compact, walkable town centre with a good evening scene on Rua das Pedras and the waterfront.
What nearly ruined the trip
Brazilian summer, January to March, brings crowds, rain and peak prices. The best known beaches, Joao Fernandes in particular, fill up fast. Prices in the centre are high for Brazil, and the coach from Rio can stretch well past three and a half hours in heavy traffic.
