Manaus is a working city of about two million people in the middle of the Amazon, and most visitors use it as the door to the rainforest. It deserves a day or two of its own. Teatro Amazonas is the reason. The opera house was built in the rubber boom and is still a working theatre, and a guided visit costs 20 reais in 2026, with a 10 reais half rate for students, teachers and visitors aged 60 and over. Visits run Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm and only 9am to 1pm on Sundays and holidays, which catches people who come back from a river trip on a Sunday afternoon. The Meeting of the Waters is the other sight that lives up to the description: the dark Rio Negro and the pale Solimoes run side by side for kilometres before they mix. Day boats from the city do the trip routinely. The jungle itself is where trips go well or badly. A lodge stay with a licensed guide, booked before you land, costs real money because it includes boats, fuel and food far from a road. The cheap version is an offer in the arrivals hall or on a WhatsApp message from somebody with no company behind them. Walk past the touts at Eduardo Gomes airport and use Uber, 99 or the official taxi desk. Health preparation is not optional here. The US CDC recommends yellow fever vaccination for travelers going to Amazonas state and lists all of Amazonas as a malaria area. See a travel clinic weeks before you go, not the week of the flight.

What was great

The opera house is genuinely astonishing and costs 20 reais to see properly. The Meeting of the Waters is a real natural spectacle a short boat ride from the port. A well run lodge puts you in primary rainforest with guides who know it, which is the reason most people make the trip.

What nearly ruined the trip

Cheap jungle offers with no company behind them are the main way trips go wrong. Health preparation takes planning: yellow fever vaccination is recommended for the state and malaria is present. The city is hot, humid and spread out, so you rely on ride apps, and the Sunday hours at the opera house trip people up.
