San Francisco is busy again. Visitor numbers have climbed back past where they were before 2020, and the things people come for never moved: the Golden Gate, the grid of absurd hills, Golden Gate Park, the cable cars, and the food in the Mission, Chinatown and the Richmond. The city is easy to love and easy to overpay for. The room rate on a booking site is not the bill. San Francisco charges a 14 percent transient occupancy tax on stays of under 30 days, and many hotels add a Tourism Improvement District assessment of 2 to 2.25 percent as a separate line. On a 300 dollar night that is roughly 48 dollars before parking, which downtown hotels charge for separately and heavily. Alcatraz is the ticket people get wrong. It is a National Park Service site reached only on Alcatraz City Cruises from Pier 33, and the adult day tour is 47.95 dollars. Night tours are 59.65 dollars and go first. In summer and October, dates can be gone weeks out. Anything sold as an Alcatraz tour by somebody else needs a close read, because some of them sail past the island instead of landing on it. The cable cars are a real 19th century machine and worth riding once. A single ride is 9 dollars with no transfer. For everything else, Muni is 2.85 dollars on Clipper or a contactless card and covers 120 minutes. Fog is the weather, not a forecast: July can be cold at the beach and September and October are usually the warmest weeks of the year. Phone and car break ins are the practical crime risk; leave nothing visible in a parked car, anywhere.

What was great

The setting is the point and it is free: walking up Russian Hill, across the Golden Gate Bridge or through Golden Gate Park costs nothing. The food is excellent at every price, from Mission burritos to dim sum in the Richmond. Muni and BART make a car unnecessary inside the city, and the cable cars and Alcatraz are rare things that live up to the postcard.

What nearly ruined the trip

It is expensive, and the hotel bill grows by about 16 percent after the posted rate once the occupancy tax and district assessment land. Alcatraz sells out and copycat tours muddy the booking. Car break ins and phone snatching are common enough that locals plan around them. Summer visitors pack for California and meet fog and wind instead.
