What it is
A landmark hotel on West 23rd Street in Chelsea, Manhattan, reopened after a long restoration, with rooms from 200 sq ft, a lobby bar, El Quijote and a Japanese restaurant in the building.
Why travelers stay here
For the building. Very few hotels anywhere have this much cultural history still legible in the fabric, and the restoration kept the staircase, the ironwork and the art rather than replacing them.
What is genuinely good
A genuinely historic building handled with care, the staircase and lobby art, El Quijote next door, and a Chelsea address within walking distance of the High Line and the Village.
Downsides
Small standard rooms. A lobby that functions partly as a tourist attraction. No published rates, and accessible rooms require emailing to book.
Best for
Anyone with an interest in twentieth-century music, writing or art, and anyone who would rather stay somewhere specific than somewhere large.
Consider staying elsewhere if
You need space, or you want a quiet anonymous hotel. Neither describes this building.
