RuinMyTrip guide to Brasserie Lipp

Official Review

Written by RuinMyTrip Editorial from published research and official sources, not from a personal trip. It is not a traveler review and is never counted in the community rating. How we research.

What it is

A brasserie on Boulevard Saint-Germain, open since 1880, with an intact tiled and mirrored ground-floor room long associated with French political and literary life.

Why travelers eat here

For the room, which is one of the last unmodernised brasserie interiors in Paris, and for the choucroute, which is the dish it has always been known for.

What is genuinely good

An intact nineteenth-century interior, fair starter prices for the area, classic brasserie cooking, and a Saint-Germain address opposite the Deux Magots and the Flore.

Downsides

Visitors are routinely seated upstairs. Service can be cool. The food is good rather than remarkable.

Best for

Anyone interested in Parisian institutions, and anyone who wants choucroute in the room that made it famous.

Consider eating elsewhere if

Being seated in the lesser room would spoil the evening for you. It is a real risk and not worth pretending otherwise.

Practical advice

Ask for the ground floor and be prepared to be told no. Go at an off hour to improve your chances. Order the choucroute or the herring.

Prices and reservations

A la carte, starters from 13.00 euros. Reservations taken, though the ground floor is allocated on arrival.

Getting there

Metro 4 to Saint-Germain-des-Pres, which surfaces directly outside.

Where it sits

Boulevard Saint-Germain in the sixth, opposite the Cafe de Flore and Les Deux Magots, in the middle of the Left Bank literary quarter.

How long to allow

Two hours.

The RuinMyTrip verdict

Come for the 1880 room and the choucroute, ask for the ground floor, and do not expect the food to be the story.

★★★★☆ Official Review

Thirteen Euros for Sardines, and the Room Has Not Changed

Brasserie Lipp charges 13.00 euros for vintage sardines and 13.50 euros for herring fillets with potatoes in oil, which is roughly what a starter costs anywhere on that stretch of Saint-Germain and considerably less than the address suggests. It opened in 1880 and the ground-floor room, with its painted ceramic tiles, mirrors and mahogany, is intact. It spent the twentieth century as the canteen of French political…
