Nobody sees your dates until you post them, and nobody can message you until you say yes.

Most visitors fly into San Francisco International (SFO). BART runs from the airport into downtown, so a car is optional and usually a cost rather than a help: downtown hotel parking is charged separately and break ins are the most common crime against visitors.

Inside the city, Muni buses, streetcars and light rail cost 2.85 dollars on Clipper, MuniMobile or a contactless card, and the fare covers 120 minutes. The cable cars are separate at 9 dollars a single ride with no transfer. Pay cash with exact change, Clipper or MuniMobile.

Alcatraz is the one booking to make as soon as dates are firm. Alcatraz City Cruises is the only ferry the National Park Service authorizes, it leaves from Pier 33, and the adult day tour is 47.95 dollars including the ferry and audio tour. Night tours are 59.65 dollars.

For museums, the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park lists adult tickets at 49 dollars and 55 dollars on peak dates, so pick the date in the booking flow before budgeting.

When to go: September and October are usually the warmest, clearest weeks. June to August is often foggy and cool near the ocean. Hotels cost more during big conventions, so check rates across a few dates before committing.

Where to walk: Russian Hill and the Hyde Street cable car line, North Beach, Chinatown, the Mission, Golden Gate Park and the bridge itself. Fisherman's Wharf is where the Alcatraz ferry leaves, not the best part of the city.
