Tehran has mountains, one of the great bazaars, and a food culture that deserves the reputation. The US, UK, Canada, and Australia all advise against travel to Iran in 2026. This is not a packing list.
Tehran is a real capital: more than nine million people against the Alborz, with the Grand Bazaar, museum collections, and a food scene that travelers who have been there talk about for years. The city is not a desert outpost. It is a mountain-backed metropolis with ski slopes a short drive north and one of the densest urban cultures in the region.
What is worth saying out loud
The architecture of the twentieth century, from Azadi Tower to the museum circuit, is distinctive. Iranian cooking, from kebabs to tahdig to the sweet shops, is not a sideshow. The bazaar is a working market, not a staged souk. People who know the city describe hospitality that is specific and memorable. Those things are true whether or not you can go this year.
The 2026 advisory is not a vibe
The US State Department lists Iran as Level 4, Do Not Travel, citing terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, arbitrary arrest of US citizens, and wrongful detention. There is no US embassy in Tehran. The UK FCDO advises against all travel. Canada and Australia say the same. Dual nationals have been detained. That is the current official picture as of 2026, not a leftover from a different decade.
