Cancun visitor tax 2026: 2.50 UMA, which is 293.28 pesos per foreign visitor

Every foreign visitor entering Quintana Roo, the Mexican state that contains Cancun, owes a state charge of 2.50 UMA, which works out at 293.28 pesos in 2026. Article 51 Octies of the Ley de Derechos del Estado de Quintana Roo sets that tariff for the use or enjoyment of state public domain property, and INEGI, the national statistics institute, fixed the daily UMA at 117.31 pesos with effect from February 1, 2026.

Who is exempt

The same article exempts foreign visitors who enter Quintana Roo across the southern border of the state. Article 51 Nonies charges cruise passengers a separate five US dollar right, collected by the shipping line at the moment the ticket is sold, and states that paying it releases those passengers from the charge in Article 51 Octies. The state collects the visitor charge through its own official portal at visitax.gob.mx.

A worked example

A family of four flying into Cancun in 2026 owes four times 293.28 pesos, or 1,173.12 pesos. Two travellers owe 586.56 pesos. The charge is per person and per entry rather than per night, so a two week stay and a three night stay cost exactly the same.

What is still unclear

The law fixes the tariff in UMA and the official payment portal does not publish a peso amount on its public pages, so the figure the portal actually charges may not match the UMA calculation to the centavo.
